World Lion Day : From being declared as Critically Endangered in the year 2000 to a recently recorded 650(counted in 2017) Asiatic Lions in the protected areas of Gujarat, we have witnessed a huge increase in the number of lions since past 5 years. This was possible with the efforts taken by wildlife authorities. There was a time during the Nawab’s rule when the population was brought down to mere 2 digits due to excessive hunting activities. But the Nawab took control of the situation and banned all such illegal hunting. Gir Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1965 as a protected area for the preservation of Asiatic Lions.
We are the only home to Asiatic Lions and it’s our duty to take care of the pride of Gujarat. On today’s occasion of World Lion Day, let’s pledge to preserve this invaluable gift that we have and let’s encourage the legally done Lion watching tours only.
