Mahavir Jayanti is celebrated by Jains and it marks the day of the birth of Lord Mahaveer who is the 24th and the last Jain Tirthankara. This day is one of the most important festival observed by Jains. Lord Mahaveer was born as a prince but he renounced the worldly pleasures and meditated for almost 12 years. He preached non-violence and lessons on how to gain spiritual freedom.
On Mahaveer Jayanti, Jains do a lot of charity work to help the poor people and animals. Some people also observe silence. People do Abhishek of Lord Mahaveer’s statue. This way the festival is a symbol of peace and mastering over self-control through various fasts.
